Human beings will always cluster together. They will always define themselves in opposition to those of another cluster.

Human beings, by nature, are tribal. And that isn’t going to change.

However, there are some other factors to throw into the equation.

Human beings are intelligent enough to use language, and to express themselves intelligently. Not everyone, but enough.

Moreover, they are also intelligent enough to know that doing things a certain way will probably be harmful. Not everyone, but enough.

So I believe that the battle, in the years to come, will be between our inherited behaviours and our evolving intelligence informing us that we would do well to start doing things differently.

I trust that all of this will be resolved satisfactorily. Why? Because I don’t think that there is any other option available. Never mind Plan B, this is more like Plan Z. And I think that we are intelligent enough as a species, more or less, to recognise the predicament we are in.

And intelligent enough to realise that all of this tribalism ain’t gonna help us anymore. That, like it or not, we have to extend the tribe to include everyone.
