NATIONALISM / PATRIOTISM

From the perspective of the nationalist, the nation has, apparently, been here forever, and will be here forever. Not so. A nation is not a permanent structure. It is not fixed and absolute. It is a collective of individuals, ever changing. How great a nation is, is the sum and aggregate of how great each individual is. A nation is not great by default.

…………………

In asserting the glory and the greatness of their nation, many would seek to pass off their own deficiencies. When combined with the failings and the inadequacies of all of their compatriots, it merely exacerbates it.

…………………

There are no boundaries in reality. Just in our hearts.

…………………

“Nation … Pride … Love …”

When all is said and done, it is just a bit of earth; with some buildings and some trees on it. Why are you attached to it? There are bits of earth like that everywhere.

“Special …”

Really, so that bit of earth has faculties and powers that no other bit of earth has? If I wave a magic wand will some dancing unicorns appear?

“Home … Ancestors … Blood …”

Years ago – maybe, a hundred years, or, maybe, a thousand years – your ancestors would have called a different bit of earth, “Home”. It really isn’t as fixed and permanent as you think, honey.

And you can spill as much of your blood – and other people’s – onto the earth as you want, it won’t benefit that bit of land one little bit.
